SHI-KYU   ( Purple Belt – 4th Kyu )

 

General Requirements

Regular dojo attendance.

Member in good standing with the Kazoku Budokan.

Minimum of three months time in grade as Blue Belt or instructors approval.

General Knowledge

1.    Japanese terminology for all techniques required for this and previous ranks.

2.    Ability to teach beginning level students basic skills.

General Terminology                       

Students should show increased proficiency and knowledge of terms learned at previous belt levels including names of various techniques.  Students should also be familiar with terms listed below:

 WAZA – Techniques

Students will demonstrate the following techniques, as well as those of   previous belt ranks.

Dachi-Waza: Stance Techniques

1.    Reverse Cat Stance:                    Kosa Dachi       

2.    Flat Footed Kosa Dachi:             Bensoku Dachi

3.  Jungle Stance:                             Mitusrin Dachi

Te-Waza: Hand Techniques

1. Haito Uchi:  Ridge Hand Strike

2. Uraken Uchi:  Back Fist Strike (Reiken Uchi)

3. Morote Ura Tsuki:  Augmented Uppercut Punch

Geri-Waza: Kicking Techniques

        1. Kakato Otoshi Geri:  Axe Kick

        2.  Kaki Geri:  Hook Kick

        3.  Ashi Barai:  Foot Sweep

Uke-Waza: Blocking Techniques

1.       Tetsui Uke:   Hammerfist Block

2.   Gedan Kaki Uke:  Low Scooping Block

Nage Waza: Throwing Techniques

Ukemi Waza: Breaking Falling Techniques

Increased proficiency in previously learned techniques

Atemi Waza:  Vital Point Techniques

Understanding of "Atemi" and the correct methods of striking the below listed target area

          Kansetu Waza: Joint Locking Techniques

1.    Armpit Armlock:        Ude Waki Gatame

Osae / Jime Waza: Holding Techniques

1.    Single Wing Lock:                 Kata Ha Jime

2.    Gyaku Juji Jime:                   Reverse Cross Lock    

Goshin Waza:  Self defense techniques

Students will demonstrate a defense for the following attacks

1.    Front choking with hands while lying on back

2.      Rear choking with hands while lying on stomach

Ippon Kumite Waza: Single attack defense techniques

Students will demonstrate Twenty (20) one-step defenses for the below listed attacks, including five  (5) with takedowns:

            Single right hand punch

            Single left hand punch

Kata: Formal Exercises

Mawashi Uke
Bokken Kata of Your Choice

Kumite: Free style sparring

Student should demonstrate basic level sparring skills exercising control and timing. Emphasis should be on a "give and take" approach between partners
